Walking at Grizedale Forest

20th Sept 08

It was a over cast day though warm and dry. With the company of Rose and H (on my back), I parked up at High Stott Park and started to walk south to find the path. We found the path just pass Bobbin Mill and headed westward and upward towards High Dam.
When we got to High Dam this was our first rest and a chance for H to get out and stretch his legs.

Rose and H catching their breath  H and his morning snack.....not impress with the walk though  View of High Dam from the south

From High Dam we headed north-west. There was I lot of marshy parts on this path, though a very enjoyable walk through pine forest and marshy scrub land. We followed and crossed Little Mire Beck.

Stream running down to High Dam  View towards Thwaite Head

As we got closer to the small hamlet of Crosslands Rose was getting hungry and thirsty. As the only food we had was a packet of biscuits and H's dinner, a Pub would of been a lovely sight. For some bizarre reason I thought there was a pub about a mile up the road at Thwaite Head. Alas not. 2 Houses and a farm was about the size of it.

From Ausin Fell Wood looking over Thwaite Head Fell  A peaceful place  From the top of Ausin Wood Fell Looking eastward

I loved the walk up Thwaite Head Fell and then beyond up Ausin Fell Wood. The variety of terrain was surprising and pleasing. I am not allowed to publish the photo I took of Rose as she eventually got to the summit of Ausin Wood - (sphere and a blender were mentioned). With the lack of Pub and food, this was a good place for a rest. H was asleep on my back. Easy for some on the climb.
It was down hill from here. We followed the path down through the wood yard and on to the road. Short walk down the road and back on the path up towards High Cat Crag and then onwards to the shores of Windermere.

The view of Windermere from High Cat Crag  loads of energy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  A lovely stone crossing in Boat House Wood

As expected the path flattens out as it wanders next to the lake. though typically the is only a token piece of land to be used as a path.

Nice bridge near Silver Holme  The view up Windermere looking north

Last point, don't expect to see many big Oak trees in Great Oaks Wood. It is a complete mess
